The House and Accommodation

The style throughout this house is clean and neutral, extremely stylish and well furnished. This is very much a contemporary house but in the shell of a traditional building. Features have been made of the old parts of the house. The ground floor of the Bastide is largely open plan from seating, TV area, dining and kitchen areas. The space has been recently renovated and the flow from area to area is very well thought out.

Kitchen / Dining Area: There is space for 12 to sit comfortably on the kitchen dining table.

There is a large fridge / freezer, Nespresso coffee making facilities, microwave, kettle, dishwasher, Lacanche cooker with 5 gas rings and two ovens. There is all the cutlery, crockery, pots, pans trays and baking equipment necessary for the number the house accommodates. There is a  wooden side table. From the kitchen and dining area 3 windows face east to glorious views.

Sitting area: Two large linen sofas face each other either side of a coffee table and in front of a large arched stone open fireplace.

TV area / Bar area: There is a fantastic alcove with exposed stone that houses a fantastic bar with drinks fridge and ice maker.  Two bar stools attend the bar. There are two leather armchairs and a sofa just out from under the alcove. There is a projector with Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc, the screen for which is lowered at the press of a button on the coffee table.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Bedroom 1 – First Floor – Double Bedroom with ensuite Bathroom

This bedroom has a kingsize double bed, with exposed beam ceiling.

From this bedroom there is access onto a private terrace with two chairs and coffee table with stunning views over the Provençal country below.

The ensuite has a very large walk-in shower, WC and two basins. There is a hairdryer.

 

Bedroom 2 – First Floor – King size double Bed with ensuite Bathroom

Kingsize double bed with windows facing south and east over the vineyard. There is a large flat screen TV.

The ensuite bathroom is behind a separating wall and has a freestanding bath, a large shower, two basins and a WC. There is a hairdryer.

 

Bedroom 3  – Second Floor – King size double Bed with ensuite Bathroom

This is a very large bedroom occupying the whole of the top floor of the house. It has three windows filling it with natural light. Kingsize double bed. Flat screen TV.

There is a desk as well and this room would be ideal for those who need peace to get some work done.

The ensuite bathroom has a large freestanding bath, a basin and a WC. There is a hairdryer.

 

Bedroom 4 – Ground Floor – Queen size double Bedroom with ensuite Bathroom

Queen double bedroom with access onto a lower terrace. The terrace has a little seating setup for the room with a water fountain and views over the Provencal landscape.

From the terrace there is access to the swimming pool.

The ensuite bathroom has a walk in shower, a basin and a WC.

Bedroom 5 – First Floor – King size Double bed with ensuite Bathroom

This bedroom has a king size double bed.

There is access from this bedroom onto an upper terrace with a large seating area comprising a sofa, two arm chairs and a small table seating 4 with sun umbrella. There are views over the Provençal countryside.

The ensuite bathroom has a walk in shower, WC and basin. There is a hairdryer.

Bedroom 6 –  In the pool house – Queen size Double Bed

Queensize double bed and plenty of storage room. This is tucked away behind the open plan table and sofa and has use of the pool house shower room which also has the sauna.

Double French doors open onto a terrace facing East with a little table and chairs. A great private space to enjoy the view. It also has French doors that open onto the pool terrace.

The bathroom has a walk-in shower, basin and WC. There is a hairdryer.

The Pool House

There is a dining table with a large flat screen TV and lounging sofa. There are nespresso coffee making facilities and a fridge freezer. There is a large walk in shower, WC and basin.

This is where the sauna is.

Bedroom 6 is in the pool house.

Garden, Grounds, Terraces and Eating Areas

The villa is principally orientated to the east on a hillside overlooking its own vineyard onto pastures and meadow land. Longer views to north and south extend to the distinctive wooded hills of the Luberon.

Glass doors from the main kitchen / living area lead out onto a dining terrace with dining table (seating for 12) shaded under a bamboo loggia. Here there is a gas Webber BBQ.

A wide gravel terrace runs the full length of the eastern front of the villa bounded by an iron fence and a row of handsome terracotta pots with olives.

There are numerous seating areas including a large seating area also adjoining an access from Bedroom 5 (at the North western corner of the house) with seating / sofas / tables and a sun umbrella.

A wide concrete pathway runs along the rear of the villa. Here there is a table tennis table.

These spaces provide ample choice of relaxing areas to enjoy at all hours of the day in peace, sunshine, shade, privacy or company.

At the northern end of the villa there is a small courtyard terrace forming its own seating area with a small round table and access by doors on two sides from the kitchen and from the lower landing. Handsome wrought iron gates open to a large gravelled terrace with a stone water fountain as a central feature.

Swimming Pool

The heated saltwater swimming pool measures 12m x 5 (1m at the shallow end, 1.5m at its deepest). To its rear side it is framed by an attractive stone wall with a border of flowering shrubs. There are larger terrace areas at each end of the pool. There are 10 sun beds with side tables. A wooden decked terrace extends on the eastern side enjoying the best of the views and shade by a sun umbrella. There are in all 4 sun umbrellas providing shade around the pool.

At the far end of the swimming pool is the recently completed annex / Pool House / Bedroom 6.

Location

La Bastide Celestre is located just 4kms from the small town of Apt in the Vaucluse department of the Provences-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region.

Apt is the principal town of the Luberon mountains.

It is 41 miles east of Avignon and the Rhone.

TGV

Avignon (1 hour 17 mins / 37 miles) – During May to September there is a direct train from London St Pancras to Avignon with a journey time of 6 hours. Please check the Eurostar website for the schedule. 

Things to see and do nearby

Apt

Just 4kms from la Bastide is Apt – this is your nearest port of call for supermarkets, shops, restaurants, bakeries etc, as well as being a lovely place to enjoy. There is a market here on a Saturday.

Bonnieux

12 miles from the house (25 mins) is Bonnieux. There is a market here on a Friday. It has some lovely restaurants, cafes, bakeries and fantastic views over the landscape of the Luberon.

Gordes

30 mins – 15 miles

This village was voted in 2023 the most beautiful village in the world. It has distinct stone hilltop buildings with beautiful narrow cobblestone streets.  In the 10th Century church is the Pol Mara museum, a contemporary Flemish painter. There are also the cellars of the Saint Firmin Palace, a semi-troglodytic site (LINK HERE)

Village des Bories

40 mins / 19 miles

This is an old village built from dry stones in immaculate condition.

Walking

There are Troglodyte water mills in the Forges of Véroncle that can be discovered by foot.

Lourmarin

31 mins – 14 miles

This is another typical perched hill-top village. It has a lovely selection of restaurants and cafes spilling out onto the beautiful streets.

There is a market here on a Friday morning.

This is the home of Albert Camus – the Nobel prize-winning author.

Rousillon

24 mins – 11 miles

There is a market here on a Thursday.

This is a beautiful and distinct village. Famous for its ochre production. The houses are built of varying shades of oranges, yellow and red. Truly beautiful.

Tourist Office

We always recommend to our guests to pop into their local Tourist Office. The closest one is in Apt and here is their website (LINK HERE). Here you will always be able to find out what is going on in the area.

Saint-Rémy de Provence

1 hour 10 mins (38 miles)

St Rémy is a very picturesque Provencal town. It is the perfect destination for an ice cream and a wander around its narrow medieval alleyways and boutiques. Not to miss whilst there are the ancient ruins of the Roman city of Glanum.

There are a great selection of restaurants and bars, and the evening atmosphere is great.

Avignon

Avignon is 1 hour 12 mins ( 35 miles) from the property.

There is the Palais des Papes, an important medieval gothic building, boasting one of the largest gothic fortresses in Europe, as well as La Chartreuse, the Carthusian monastery founded in the1300s by Pope Innocent VI. There is also excellent shopping in Avignon.

L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

40 mins (23 miles) You can take a leisurely boat ride on the canals that pass through L’isle sur-la-Sorgue which is a small but vibrant town, particularly well known for its many antique shops.

Art Classes

Martyn Baldwin, RBA: Award-winning English andFrench-speaking artist who exhibits in London’s West End. Martyn Baldwin has 30 years of teaching experience at all levels and is based in St. Rémy throughout the year. The Provencal Colorado

Located less than 4 kms away from the house. The landscape of brightly coloured rocks stretching as far as the eye can see is breathtaking. The trail leads through grandiose scenery with spectacular panoramic views.

The Bruoux Mines

The Brouox mines are ancient ochre quarries located less than 10 kms away. Its underground tunnels lead you into a mysterious world where you can discover how limestone was mined for centuries.

Valensole

c 45kms. The Valensole Plateau is a breathtaking sight with fields of lavender stretching as far as the eye can see. In summer when in flower its a blaze of purple colour.  The scent of lavender combined with the landscape provide a glorious sensory experience.

Aix-en-Provence

c 50kms. A city of art and culture with a rich architectural heritage. As the historic capital of Provence it is renowned for its distinguished charm and relaxed lifestyle. There are a wonderful choice of museums, exhibitions and festivals.

Avignon and The Palais des Papes

c50kms. Once the residence of The Popes in the Middle Ages it is a fine example of Gothic architecture with its imposing stone walls and towers.

The Lake of Sainte-Croixe

c62kms.  In the Verdon regional nature park this is a jewel of tourquoise filled with the waters of the Verdon. An idyllic setting for relaxing, an expedition or watersports.

The Calanques of Marseille

c75kms. A popular hiking and swimming destination characterised by towering cliffs, secluded coves and crystal clear waters. Of great nature conservation interest sheltering an exceptional variety of rare animal and plant species.

    Additional Information

    Arrival welcome and departure: Tenants will be met on arrival and will be shown how everything works, both inside and out.

    Wifi and Broadband: There is broadband internet access throughout the house.

    Housebook: There is a very helpful House Information Book with details of recommended local shops, restaurants, markets, cultural, sporting and recreational activities plus many other suggestions on what to do and where to go in the vicinity. The folder also includes maps, brochures and contact details of local doctors, dentists, plumbers, electricians, pool maintenance and more detailed information on all referred to here.

    Additional entertainment: There are a selection of board games as well as English books. There is table tennis table and the equipment necessary. There is a projector, with Netflix, Amazon Prime, Canal+ et Apple TV +

    Optional / additional services available: Provided sufficient notice is given, a part time cook can be found. Her / his payment will be the tenants responsibility and can be ascertained in advance should tenants so wish.

    Utilities: There is a washing machine and tumble dryer.

    Air conditioning and heating: There is air-conditioning in every bedroom.

    Car Parking: There is parking for up to 5 cars.

    Terms and Conditions

    The Booking Process: A deposit of 25% of the rent will be payable to Anglo French Properties on signing the Rental Agreement with the 75% balance to be paid 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the tenancy.

    Security Deposit: A Security Deposit will also be payable to Anglo French Properties. This will cover (a) the cost of telephone calls made on the landline during the tenancy, (b) the cost of replacing/making good any losses, breakages and/or damages incurred during the rental, (c) the cost of pool heating (if required) @ EUR300 per week, and (d) any exceptional cleaning work which may be required at the end of the tenancy. It will be refunded (less any deductions as outlined above) within 4 weeks of the conclusion of the tenancy.

    Minimum stay: All rentals will be for a minimum of one week during July and August, there is a minimum 4 night stay all other times of the year.

    Arrival Time & Departure times: Tenants should arrive as soon as possible after 5pm on the commencement day. They will be welcomed on arrival, given a tour of the property and shown how everything works. Tenants should leave by 10am on the agreed day of departure.

    Number of People: Unless otherwise agreed, there should not be more than 12 people staying in the property at any one time.

    Security: The owners’ insurance policy requires that all doors are locked, and that all windows and shutters are closed when tenants are away from the property.

    Energy costs are included: The energy costs are included in the rental price.

    Heating costs are included: The heating costs are included in the rental price (excluding pool heating).

    Pool Heating: Included in June, July and August. If required in May and September it will be charged at a rate of 200 EUR / week from the security deposit.

    Linen and towels: Linen and towels, and the cleaning of the linen and towels are included in the rental price. These will be changed on a weekly basis. There are pool towels.

    Smoking: No smoking allowed inside the property. Caution should be taken when smoking outside during the summer months.

    Internet access: yes, included in the rental price.

    Optional / additional services available: any additional services, if available, (eg extra cleaning or cooking) will be agreed in advance at a pre-agreed rate per hour. These costs will be the sole responsibility of the tenant.

    Services Included: Regular housekeeping.

    Pets: Strictly no pets.
