Holiday rentals in the Dordogne

The Dordogne department, located in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of southwestern France, is known for its rich history, picturesque landscapes, and stunning medieval architecture. Named after the Dordogne River, which flows through the department, the area is a lush and green region characterized by rolling hills, deep river valleys, and dense forests. The capital, Périgueux, boasts a rich Roman heritage, with landmarks such as the Vesunna Gallo-Roman Museum and the impressive Saint-Front Cathedral, offering visitors a glimpse into its ancient past. The Dordogne is also home to the prehistoric Lascaux Caves, which feature some of the world’s most famous Paleolithic cave paintings.

The Dordogne is renowned for its exceptional gastronomy, particularly its foie gras, truffles, and walnuts. The department’s fertile lands make it ideal for agriculture, and its local markets are filled with high-quality products such as duck and goose specialties, rich cheeses, and seasonal produce. The medieval towns of Sarlat-la-Canéda and Bergerac are particularly famous for their culinary offerings, often celebrating local flavors during vibrant festivals and markets. In addition to its food, Bergerac is a well-known wine-producing area, particularly famous for its sweet Monbazillac wines, which complement the Dordogne’s gourmet reputation.

The department’s landscape is a blend of natural beauty and man-made wonders, making it a favorite destination for outdoor activities. The Dordogne River itself is perfect for canoeing, kayaking, or simply relaxing along its peaceful banks. Dotted with hundreds of châteaux, such as Château de Beynac and Château des Milandes, the region is a haven for history lovers and those seeking the charm of traditional French countryside life. Visitors are drawn to its scenic villages, many of which are officially recognized as some of the most beautiful in France, like La Roque-Gageac and Domme, which overlook the Dordogne River from their cliffside perches.
